I make art because it is healing. It is a way for me to process what I feel, see, think & experience in the world; it connects me to life. I love sharing this with other people because I think we live in a world where we are not only disconnected from each other but also our selves and Spirit. It is from this foundation that I work as an artist & teacher.
I enjoy making art with other people because of the power of knowledge, energy, healing and tuning in that is shared. As a teacher I believe that I can teach and also learn from my students & indeed I do! Each group I work with has something special to teach me about Creation, which is a spiritual process.
Children are gifted at the freedom of being close to god and creation. What I learn from children is that Creation is a process. It is not just about the end result, but the journey and the pleasure that comes from exploring everything to get there. Children teach me how natural and easy Creation can and should be.
Some of my favorite people to work with are teenagers! Teens are about the formation of identity, seeking, and finding a place to fit in the world. They are students! They are hungry for knowledge and most of all for wisdom. It is exciting for me to show them how they can build upon their initial ideas to make something they never thought possible. I have worked on several public art projects with teens who didn’t consider themselves artists when they started, but knew they were once they finished their project. I have a dream of helping teens to create businesses using art as way of uplifting them economically and spiritually.
I recently worked with a group of women in prison. It is from this group that I saw everyday healing thru the arts. In this project, called INSIDE/OUTSIDE, women were exposed to integrated arts workshops in writing, movement and visual arts. These women taught me how we are all artists with gifts of expression to share. They also show me how the thirst of spirit is quenched thru Creation.
I attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture & Art History in 2002. Since then I have apprenticed and studied with Visionary & Metaphysical Artist C. Pic Michel, Public Community Artist Jan Brown Checco and Henna & Mural Artist John Rapach. Pic taught me how art is a practice that mirrors life. She taught me why art is healing; it is Creation. Jan taught me how to focus on the creation of positive images and the importance of uplifting the viewer. John showed me how art is a practice of sharing love & meditation.
Currently, I am awakening to and studying the spiritual wisdom of human ancestry rooted in Africa. This has led me to study Kemet and Kamtian Wisdom, otherwise known as Egypt. I am awed by the sense, connection & migration this wisdom has. I am also saddened by the perversion, theft and corruption this history has but know it is all a part of a “bigger plan”.
All of this knowledge comes together to form my latest work. This work is about love, life & the power to manifest & transform. I am working with my belief system and working through negative and fearful beliefs. I am working with spiritual symbols to create images that not only heal as I create but become healing creations that are ancient expressions of beauty, meaning & power.
